La Cité de la Mer

 

Situated on the exceptional site of the Cherbourg Transatlantic Terminal. La cité de la Mer vast touristic, scientific and cultural centre entirely dedicated to the human undersea adventure has open its doors in April 2002.

 

Two major areas are shown to the public : 

  • The Ocean Area : with the Abyssal Aquarium hosting 4 000 fish (at 10.70 metres, it's the tallest in Europe), an interactive exhibition presenting the human underwater odyssey and the bathyscaph
  • The Submarine Area : the largest submarine visitable in the world "Le Redoutable" a long time kept "secret of defense", and the exhibition describing the history of submarines and the life of submariners.
  • Transatlantic Destination: week-ends and bank holidays only. The opening of the Boarding Room, prestigious witness of the Transatlantic Epic.

The Elves Forest


The Dauntless Elf advanced trail ("black"), for 16-year olds and over, is the new addition to the 3 original trails. Open to the public since last summer in 10 hectares of natural woodland. Beginners' trail for those new to the activity. The Mischievous Elf trail ("white") for 6-year olds and over. The Adventurous Elf trail ("red") for 13-year olds is semi-athletic with a new 80 m windmill. New Far West paint-ball zone open all year round.
